Pet dental health care has been touted by vets for many years, but many pet owners still haven’t got the message. Not only does dental care help keep your pet’s breath fresh and teeth in good condition, but it can prevent a whole slew of chronic diseases from causing discomfort – not to mention the costs of treatment – during the pet’s older years. Now, with February recognized in several countries as the annual Pet Dental Health Month, Richmond Hill Animal Hospital has special offers to help pet parents kick-start a new dental regime.
“The main reason why people don’t implement some sort of dental care for their pets is that it’s promoted as an all-or-nothing regime,” says Dr. Issam Kadri, owner and resident veterinarian at Richmond Hill Animal Hospital. Dr. Kadri, who completed his internship at New York’s Manhattan Veterinary Group and served seven years in 24-hour general and emergency practice hospitals, is a staunch advocate of good dental care for dogs and cats.
Oral hygiene is one of the most neglected aspects of pet health care, says Kadri. The Ontario Veterinary Medicine Association (OVMA) estimates that 90% of pets over 2 years of age have significant mouth disease. In addition, a full 50% of those require immediate attention that they seldom receive. Problems mostly stem from the collection of plaque, which consists of 80% bacteria along with saliva and food debris. Plaque is soft and almost invisible when it adheres to the teeth, but over time it hardens and forms tartar. Small breed dogs suffer more from plaque than larger dogs.
Some of the signs that a pet is in need of dental care include red and swollen gums, bad breath, changes in eating habits, drooling, pawing at the face, food dropping out of the side of the mouth and general depression. Pets can get relief from dental scaling and polishing, with the occasional extraction of damaged teeth, plus the introduction of an ongoing dental health care regime.
To promote good pet dental health, Richmond Hill Animal Hospital is offering free dental checkups to new and existing patients during February. Dr. Kadri is available to give personal advice on how to care for the pets’ teeth going forward.
“And if the pet needs any work done, we’ll give 5% off all dental work scheduled during February as a result of the checkup,” says Dr. Kadri. “The plan is to help pet owners get a clear picture of their dog or cat’s oral state and put together a daily dental program that can help to prevent future problems.”
